Important 1942-D Over Horizontal D Nickel, MS63 Full Steps

1942-D/D 5C D Over Horizontal D MS63 Full Steps PCGS. FS-027. A beloved Guide Book variety and one of the most celebrated blundered mintmark instances of the 20th century, the 1942-D Over Horizontal D remains elusive in Mint State; Fivaz and Stanton describe it as the most elusive of the well-established major Jefferson nickel varieties in such condition. The present piece is not only Mint State, it also sports a delightfully sharp strike that includes impressive definition on the steps of Monticello. Softly lustrous surfaces shine gently beneath gold and rose patina. The blundered mintmark is plain under magnification, and the overall visual appeal is magnificent. Population: 2 in 63 Full Steps, 3 finer (5/08).
