Description

1953-S Jefferson Nickel, MS65
Five Full Steps, Sole NGC Example So-Honored

1953-S 5C MS65 Five Full Steps NGC. The 1953-S has an unwanted but accurate reputation as being among the worst-struck of all Jefferson nickels. The Bowers Guide Book suggests merely 1 in 5,000 examples have five full steps, and even that distinction does not guarantee sharpness anywhere else on the coin. This example is softly defined with some peripheral weakness, but among the few high-grade '53-S survivors it is sharp by comparison. The fields are partially prooflike and supremely lustrous with a pale champagne-gold hue. NGC reports just this single MS65 coin with the Five Full Steps designation (10/16).(Registry values: P1)
