Description

Premium Gem 1955-D/S Nickel
Guide Book FS-501 Variety

1955-D/S 5C MS66 PCGS. FS-501. Similar to the 1938-D/S Buffalo nickel, there are several reverse dies for the 1955-D/S, but FS-501 is the Guide Book variety. It shows the undermintmark S above and to the upper left of the Denver mintmark. Die lines near the PL in PLURIBUS provide further markers. Honey-gold fields contrast with gunmetal-blue devices. Lustrous and nearly pristine with traces of the planchet surface on Jefferson's jaw. The San Francisco Mint was downgraded to Assay Office status in 1955. Remaining dies were sent to other facilities as an economy measure.(Registry values: P1)
