Description

2000-P Jefferson Nickel, MS65
Struck by Two Obverse Dies

2000-P 5C MS65 PCGS. This intriguing Jefferson nickel has two obverses, rotated approximately 225 degrees from coin turn. Both sides are weakly struck due to improperly spaced dies, but exhibit a readable date and mintmark and a partial outline of the bust of Jefferson. Although unstruck areas retain the dimpled texture of the planchet surface, post-strike contact is confined to the rim near IN G on one side, and the rim near BERT on the other side. The surfaces are brilliant, luminous, and satiny. Double-headed and double-tailed mint errors are extremely rare. A few double-tailed coins are known, including a Washington quarter from two reverse dies that sold in our Denver Signature sale (Heritage, 8/2006), for nearly $42,000. This Jefferson nickel, however, is the only Mint-made two-headed coin known to us among regular production coinage.
