Amazing Gold 5 Won 1909, One of Two Pieces KnownYung Hi gold 5 Won Year 3 (1909), KM1142, J&V AD8, Dragon in circle/Value in wreath, MS64 NGC. Fully brilliant, and well struck, with prooflike fields, and a superb strike. Even though NGC has certified this piece as MS, we think it more correctly should be Proof, or Specimen, as it is definitely not a normal circulation striking. An extremely rare issue and (along with the following two lots) one of the most important coins in all Korean numismatics. Only two pieces are known, and the other is in a Japanese museum. No example has ever been offered for public sale of this date Korean gold coin.
The Mint Bureau, which had been striking Korean coins for 20 years, was closed in 1904 due to Japanese pressure. The Osaka Mint then coined the Korean gold coins of 1906, 1908, and 1909, with two three-piece sets known of the 1909 issue, one remains in the Japanese museum, and the other we offer in this sale of the Jacobs Collection.
