1793 S-1, B-1 Chain AMERI. Cent, AU55
From the Garrett and Naftzger Collections
Extremely Rare Late Die State
The Finest Known with the Rim Break
1793 1C Chain, AMERI., S-1, B-1, R.4, AU55 PCGS Secure. CAC.
Ex: Garrett-Naftzger-Weinberg. Breen Die State VI. While the heavy
rim break on TAT in STATES is immediately obvious on the lowest
grade coins, it is fully displayed on this impressive AU Chain
AMERI. cent. Only about a half dozen examples are known with the
rim cud, and the next finest grades just VG. The exceptional
surfaces display intermingled olive and chocolate-brown toning.
Trivial handling marks are intermixed with original planchet marks
as minted.The obverse has light clash marks from the nose down to the neck and beneath the bust, with wavy surfaces from die bulging behind Liberty's head. A crescent-shaped bulge is visible at the 1 in the date. Faint die cracks extend left and right from the reverse rim break, nearly reaching the first S in STATES, and joining the E.
In January 1884, W. Elliot Woodward wrote:
"1793 Flowing hair; reverse 'Ameri;' uncirculated, with very fine surface on both sides; the reverse particularly is nearly proof; the obv. has some little scratches which are barely perceptible; with the exception of the Mickley cent sold by me in 1867, and afterwards sold in the McKenzie Coll., and one other, I believe this to be the finest example known of this, the rarest variety of the 1793 cent; of beautiful chocolate color. For reverse see plate."
There is no mention of the reverse rim break in the 1979 Garrett catalog where the coin was graded AU50.
Alan Weinberg's commentary: Acquired privately at my kitchen table from Ted Naftzger who purposely kept it out of his large cent collection that sold to Eric Streiner as Ted liked this coin too much. Bob Grellman once told me he liked this cud S-1 more than my Uncirculated S-1. It is certainly more charming. This cud specimen is doubly thick at the cud location with the next finest S-1 cud being only Very Good. One of my favorite coins.
Cataloger's Commentary: This lovely and important Chain AMERI. cent is the finest known of the late die state, and it ranks as the sixth finest Sheldon-1 of all die states. Bill Noyes grades the piece XF45 with Average Plus surfaces and makes no grade point deductions for its quality. Del Bland also grades this piece XF45 and tied for the seventh finest S-1 in his Condition Census. Our EAC grade is XF45.
The Weinberg Specimen. Rich olive-brown surfaces are virtually perfect, showing a small mark on Liberty's jaw and a few other trivial handling marks. A few planchet marks remain on the obverse that were present when this piece was struck. The reverse is virtually flawless.
