Description

1793 S-4 Chain Cent, AU50
Distinctive Periods Obverse Variety
Among the Top Dozen of the Variety

1793 1C Chain, AMERICA, Periods, S-4, B-5, R.3, AU50 PCGS. Ex: Koshkarian. Breen Die State III, a late die state with two cracks from the obverse border at 8 o'clock. This is the last Chain cent variety struck in March 1793 before the Wreath design was introduced the next month, per popular numismatic scholarship. Periods following the date and LIBERTY make attribution immediate, as the obverse die appears nowhere else in the series. The treatment of Liberty's hair differs from the other Chain cent varieties and may suggest a different engraver for this obverse die. The Sheldon-4 is generally considered the last of the Chain cents produced prior to introduction of the Wreath cents.

This lovely cent exhibits smooth and glossy chocolate-brown surfaces with no planchet flaws. Trivial contact marks include a few light nicks and pinpricks that are mostly hidden in the devices. William C. Noyes conservatively grades this piece net VF30 and 12th finest in his census, while we agree with Bob Grellman's VF35 grade. Del Bland's Condition Census in Walter Breen's Large Cent Encyclopedia records coins grading MS63, MS60, AU55, XF45 (3), and XF40 (4). Although not recorded in Bland's census, this piece would rank as tied for 11th finest in that listing. Our EAC grade VF35. PCGS Periods Obverse Population: 4 in 50, 9 finer. PCGS S-4 Population: 3 in 50, 3 finer (11/21).
