    Description

    1793 S-3, B-4 Chain Cent, Fine 12
    AMERICA Reverse

1793 1C Chain, AMERICA, S-3, B-4, Low R.3, Fine 12 PCGS. Breen Die State 1, with no clash marks on the obverse. The 1793 Chain cents were the first coins struck for circulation inside the Philadelphia Mint. The reverse design was soon replaced by the Wreath motif, making the 1793 Chain cent a sought-after, elusive, first-year design type.

The letters R and T in LIBERTY are close together at the base, with the large R leaning right, and AMERICA is fully spelled out on the reverse, identifying the S-3, B-4 variety. This impressive Fine 12 example retains some interior detail on the central devices, and the date and legends are still legible, but very weak in places on the reverse. The mostly smooth mahogany brown surfaces show some linear planchet flaws on the lower obverse. Our EAC grade VG8.
