Description

1793 S-3, B-4 Chain Cent, VF30
Important Early Die State

1793 1C Chain, AMERICA, S-3, B-4, Low R.3, VF30 NGC. Breen Die State I, and rarely encountered without clash marks or other die failure. The omnipresent reverse flowlines are virtually invisible on this piece that had to be one of the first Sheldon-3 cents struck. Probably among the top couple dozen examples known, this cent has several minor rim bruises and trivial surface marks on each side, but the surfaces are free of porosity or corrosion, and exhibit excellent dark chocolate-brown patina. This piece exhibits the sharpness congruent with NGC's grade. Our EAC grade VF20.
From The Carlyle A. Luer Collection.
