Description

1793 Liberty Cap Cent, Fair 2
Reverse of S-12 and S-15

1793 1C Liberty Cap, S-12, B-21, Low R.6, Fair 2 PCGS. This cent poses a challenge for the specialist as the attribution is uncertain. The reverse is clearly the die that is shared between S-12 and S-15. However, the obverse identification is problematic. It is the unwavering opinion of Bill Noyes and Dan Demeo that this is S-15. The cataloger and Jim Neiswinter are less sure, and believe this is possibly an S-12. When Hollinbeck-Kagin offered this coin in 1965, they noted that Dr. Sheldon was unsure of the obverse attribution, and when they offered the coin in 1973, they wrote that it is "impossible to be absolutely sure." However, Superior offered the coin as S-15 in their January 1996 sale without mentioning the uncertainty. The top of the L in LIBERTY is complete, suggesting S-12. The ER in LIBERTY appears to touch, also suggesting S-12. Alternatively, the spacing of IBE and the spacing of the date elements both suggest S-15. This piece has smooth and attractive surfaces with a "woodgrain" toning pattern of olive and steel-brown. Both sides have insignificant circulation marks that are consistent with the grade. Our EAC grade Fair 2.
