Description

1793 S-13 Liberty Cap Cent, VG10
Beautiful Problem-Free Surfaces

1793 1C Liberty Cap, S-13, B-20, Low R.4, VG10 PCGS. Chocolate-brown surfaces are highlighted by faint splashes of mustard-gold in the protected areas. Wear is even, and underlying striking weakness only manifests in the central reverse. Some old abrasions are present, notable only at the top center of the reverse wreath and at the middle of the obverse portrait. Overall, this is a wonderfully preserved coin from the earliest days of the U.S. Mint.

The last of the three design types of 1793, the Liberty Cap is also the rarest. The original mintage was just 11,056 coins, about one-tenth of the 110,000 cents made that year. The scarcity remains true to this day, with only the presently offered Low R.4 S-13 being plausibly considered "common", and even then, not in the absolute sense of the word. This type is mostly seen in low-grade and problem-free examples are the exception, making this problem-free VG10 a no-brainer for the type collector and die marriage specialist alike.
