Description
The Anderson-DuPont/Jack Robinson Sheldon-14
1793 Liberty Cap VF 20. S-14, R.5. The famous Liberty Cap, bisecting break, triple leaves at OF variety. Dark olive-brown from a long ago cleaning and recoloring, now with hints of lighter copper colors on the obverse devices. Incredibly mark-free surfaces for an early copper, the obverse has only the tiniest signs of contact, the reverse with a minor rim bruise over the D of UNITED. Perfectly centered and well struck from this die pairing. The obverse die cracked early and completely accross from the E of LIBERTY to the rim below the 3 in the date, accounting for the high rarity of this variety, obviously, not many were struck once the obverse crack was noticed. The condition places this as one of the fourteen best known of the variety. An important rarity that will grace any collection.Ex: Anderson-DuPont (Stack's, 9/54), lot 23; A. Kosoff; R. E. Naftzger, Jr.; Quality Sales Corp. (9/80), lot 12; Dr. George E. Ewing, Jr.; Jack H. Beymer; Jack H. Robinson (Superior, 1/89), lot 19; Doug Bird.
