1793 S-7 Wreath Cent, Fine Details
Key to the Sheldon-Numbered Wreath Cents

1793 1C S-7 R6- Wreath Cent, Vine & Bars Edge, Small LIBERTY, Fine Detail, Environmental Damage, PCGS. Slightly glossy dark steel brown and chocolate with traces of reddish scale in protected areas on the obverse and darker black scale in the fields on the reverse. The highpoints on both sides are smooth but the rest of the planchet is covered with fine to moderate granularity. The only notable mark is a fine planchet fissure from the obverse rim at K-10 into the hair left of the neck (as struck), and the fissure has been lightly smoothed to minimize its appearance. MDS, Breen state III, with a subtle bulge through the top of the 179. The date is clear although the 3 is slightly weak, and the legends on the reverse are strong. Graded VG10 net G5 and tied for CC#13 in the Noyes census, his photo #28805. Bland says VG7 and tied for CC#12. This cataloger's EAC grade is net VG7. An imperfect but wholly acceptable example of this very rare variety. About 30 are known and most are in low grade with significant surface problems. This is the first cent being offered with a PCGS Detail Grade. For many of the early cents, unlike other series, "detail" grades are the norm as "straight" grades are the exception. The attribution and COL Ellsworth Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS Gold Shield label (35453.97/44293923).
Ex Dr. Eugene L. Vickery, Paramount International Coin Corp. (1972 ANA Convention Sale), 8/16/1972:807 ($475)-Robinson S. "Robbie" Brown, Jr., Superior 1/27/1996:8 ($5500)-COL Steven K. Ellsworth.

The Paramount International Coin Corporation auction at the ANA Convention, held August 15-18, 1972 in New Orleans, presented a vast and varied offering of numismatic material across four sessions. The sale opened with ancients, medieval, and general foreign coins, then moved into U.S. type sets, commemoratives, gold, and paper money, before concluding with a late session devoted to colonials, half cents, large cents, small cents, and other U.S. series. Paramount's cataloging team emphasized accessibility to both floor and mail bidders, including estimated valuations and broad coverage of United States and world issues.

For copper specialists, the highlight came in the half cent and large cent sections (lots 1364-1493), which included Liberty Cap, Draped Bust, and Classic Head examples in desirable grades, as well as a wide run of early large cents beginning with 1793 Chain and Wreath types. Later cents through the middle and late dates were offered in depth, supplemented by small cents and Lincoln cents to round out U.S. copper. This focus within the broader sale allowed copper collectors to compete for important early American pieces in a convention setting, while still appealing to the wider collecting public with the inclusion of gold, silver, patterns, and paper money. As one of Paramount's major ANA convention auctions, the 1972 sale underscored the firm's prominence in the era and provided broad opportunities for specialists and generalists alike.
