Sumptuous Near-Mint 1793 Wreath Cent
Vine and Bars Edge, S-6, B-7
1793 1C Wreath Cent, Vine and Bars AU58 PCGS. S-6, B-7, R.3.
Die State II, with bulge at left obverse extending to the jaw but
no further. This feature, present on all examples of the S-6 to
some degree, has led to nicknames such as the "Warped Die" or
"Sprung Die," two examples suggested by Crosby. As described by
Noyes, "There is always a bulge or convexity on the obverse,
running from back of the hair to the rim," and Noyes continues
by mentioning the extension to the right obverse field present on
most examples (though not all, as the present piece shows).The initial year of production at the First U.S. Mint saw only copper coins struck, but the cent, larger of the two denominations issued, saw a rapid evolution of the design, beginning with the free-flowing hair of Liberty and eponymous circular chain on the first cents and ending with a Liberty-and-cap obverse motif and a wreath on the reverse. In between was the Wreath cent, pairing the windswept look of the obverse with the reverse wreath, that actually made up a majority of the cent mintage for the year.
Wreath cents have a further subdivision in their Guide Book listing, between Lettered Edge pieces and Vine and Bars Edge coins. This S-6 example is one of the latter, though this feature is not visible in the holder. What is readily apparent is its impressive overall preservation, with just a touch of friction at the highest design elements. Though a few peripheral planchet flaws affect the chocolate-brown surfaces, the fields and well struck devices show few post-production abrasions.
