Description
1793 Wreath Cent, VF30
S-11, B-16, Lettered Edge
1793 1C Wreath, Lettered Edge, S-11, B-16, Low R.3, VF30
PCGS. Breen Die State II, showing light clash marks behind the
curls and before the neck. The 1793 Flowing Hair obverse was
initially paired with the Chain design on the reverse and was later
updated with the Wreath reverse. The attribution on the PCGS insert
identifies this example as a Wreath variety with a Lettered Edge
(reading ONE HUNDRED FOR A DOLLAR), but does not distinguish
between the Single Leaf (Sheldon-11c, Breen-16c) and the Double
Leaves (Sheldon-11b, Breen-16b), and the holder prevents a full
view of the coin's edge so further attribution is not provided. The Mint struck 63,353 Wreath reverse cents that include three variants based upon the edge design. This S-11 Lettered Edge variant is an attractive VF30 with semi-glossy surfaces of walnut-brown patina complemented with softer flows of chocolate-brown throughout. Abrasions are incidental save for a small nick on the rim in front of Liberty and a vertical mark over the CE of CENT. Typical for the variety, a lamination defect just under the 17 near the rim serves as a pedigree marker. Although the strike is slightly soft, the date and all legends are fully legible.
