Description

1793 S-10 Wreath Cent, MS64 Brown
High Condition Census
Historic Provenance

1793 1C Wreath, Vine and Bars Edge, S-10, B-10, R.4, MS64 Brown PCGS. CAC. Ex: Naftzger-Reynolds. Breen Die State I. Although the obverse die flaw is visible on this piece, the border beads are complete, unlike the later die states. Walter Breen suggested that the S-10 Wreath cents were included in the delivery of April 13. Of course, there is no original documentation that supports the production of individual die varieties.

This Choice Mint State Sheldon-10 Wreath cent exhibits fully lustrous chocolate-brown surfaces with hints of faded mint red at the date and along the border dentils, especially on the obverse. William C. Noyes conservatively grades this piece AU55 and tied for second finest of the S-10 cents. Del Bland provides an MS60 grade and records this piece in a third-place tie in his census. We agree with Del Bland and Bob Grellman with an MS60 grade. With a finer example in the ANS Collection, this example is tied for the second finest available to collectors. In all grades, PCGS and NGC have certified 69 Mint State Wreath cents including 18 submissions that grade finer than MS64. Those totals include all varieties and possible resubmissions. Our EAC grade MS60. PCGS Vine and Bars Population: 11 in 64 Brown (1 in 64+), 13 finer. PCGS S-10 Population: 2 in 64 Brown, 0 finer (11/21).
