1793 S-9, B-12 Wreath Cent, MS64 Brown
1793 1C Wreath, Vine and Bars MS64 Brown PCGS. S-9, B-12, R.2.
Our EAC Grade MS60. Chocolate-brown surfaces exhibit frosty
light tan luster on this impressive Mint State Wreath cent that
shows full cartwheel. Trivial marks on Liberty's neck will help
identify the provenance. Both sides have microscopic planchet marks
that remain from the initial planchet production. The strike is
sharp and nicely centered. The obverse has a trivial border mark at
2 o'clock, affecting a single bead.
Early Die State
A Census Level Specimen
Breen Die State III. Two reverse cracks extend through the R and I of AMERICA, although no obverse cracks have appeared on the neck, cheek, or temple of this early die state specimen. The obverse has light clash marks at Liberty's neck.
Commentary. The Sheldon-9 Wreath cent is the most plentiful die variety of the design, and examples remain in all grades through Mint State. Breen suggested that this variety composed about one-third of all Wreath cents minted in April and July, 1793. This example is not recorded in the Noyes census, nor does it appear in the Bland census. However, it is a census level specimen, fifth or sixth finest known.
Market Notes. Although a fair number of Mint State Wreath cents exist, market appearances are infrequent as examples appearing in auctions are usually purchased by established collectors with the intent of long-term ownership. We expect the same for the Mervis specimen once it finds a home in the present sale.
Provenance. Ex: Stack's (7/2008), lot 1077.
