    1793 S-8, B-13 Wreath Cent, XF45
    Early Die State

1793 1C Wreath, Vine and Bars XF45 NGC. S-8, B-13, R.3. Our EAC Grade VF30. Ex: Mervis Collection. Both sides have attractive golden-tan and light chocolate toning with a few splashes of darker steel patina. The obverse of the imperfect planchet shows a few cracks that remain from production, and both sides exhibit localized microscopic porosity. The sharpness of this pleasing Wreath cent is about 10 points finer than the net EAC grade.

Breen Die State II. The date digits appear defective from die wear on this early state cent, and a faint crack connects the bust point to the border. Delicate die cracks at LIB are faintly visible on this early state piece. The reverse has a faint diagonal crack at the center, from the E to N in CENT, bisecting the centering dot, but failing to reach either branch.

Commentary. The Horizontal Twig obverse die was mated to three different reverse dies, and appears here in its last marriage according to Breen's classification scheme. Sheldon-8 and S-9 have a different vine and bars edge pattern than the other Wreath cent varieties.

Market Notes. Enough examples of the Sheldon-8 die marriage survive so that any serious collector can obtain one. The Mervis specimen falls short of the condition census, but is an attractive example for an advanced collection, and it is likely among the top two dozen survivors of the die pair.

    Provenance. Unrecorded.
From The Adam Mervis Large Cent Collection. (NGC ID# 223H, Variety PCGS# 35456, Base PCGS# 1347)
