Description

    Impressive 1793 Chain AMERI Cent

1793 Chain 1C AMERI. Fine 12 PCGS. S-1, R.4. The Chain AMERI cents were the first large cents produced within the walls of the young Philadelphia Mint, effectively the first coins ever produced at the Mint. Numismatic lore suggests that the engraver abbreviated AMERICA for lack of space to finish this word on the die. This seems to be a rather unusual statement, given the considerable space between AMERI and UNITED. Perhaps the engraver was more concerned about providing a balanced layout for the legend.< All lettering on each side is clearly visible although the bottoms of the digits in the date are a bit weak. Medium brown and darker steel surfaces have very faint or fine porosity, barely detectable on this example. A few tiny scratches and minor rim bruises are also hard to see. The surface quality prevents an accurate statement of the die state, however, this was struck before a rim break developed over TAT.(#1340) (Registry values: P5) (NGC ID# 223G, PCGS# 1340)

Several people contacted me who felt similarly about the way the auction was handled. At this point in my career I'm much more concerned with the respectful professionalism in all forms when it comes to my life's work. I truly appreciate your efforts in t
