Description
VF Sharpness 1793 Chain Cent
Famous Sheldon-1 AMERI. Reverse
1793 Chain 1C AMERI.--Rim Damage--NCS. VF Details. S-1, B-1,
R.4. The cent was the first denomination struck by the fledgling
first Philadelphia Mint, and the AMERI. variety was the first cent
issue. Thus, the Sheldon-1 AMERI. cent is the first die variety and
the first issue of any denomination struck for circulation by the
U.S. Mint. As such, its historical importance is significant.
Perhaps the majority of survivors are sufficiently worn that the
AMERI. legend is indistinct. The present piece, however, has bold
legends and pleasing detail on the portrait. The chain, of course,
is well defined. The rims display a series of minor to moderate
bruises, but the tan-brown surfaces lack verdigris or obtrusive
marks. Two tiny planchet voids are noted, beneath the chin and to
the right of the date. EAC 6.From The Martin L. Diffenbaucher, Jr. Collection.(Registry values: P5)
