Description

    1793 Chain AMERI Cent, S-1, B-1, VF25
    First U.S. Mint Coinage

1793 Chain 1C AMERI. VF25 PCGS. S-1, B-1, R.4. The Chain cents were the first coins struck at the U.S. Mint. We know this since they carry the same Vine and Bars edge found on the early Wreath cents. Later Wreath cents have a Lettered edge, like the Liberty Cap cents struck from 1793 to 1795. We also know the order that the five varieties of Chain cents were minted through the study of die states. Known as the emission sequence, the order of striking shows that the Chain AMERI cents were the first pieces minted in early March 1793, the first coins struck in the Philadelphia Mint building.
This piece represents Breen Die State V, with a die crack through the tops of TATE. The surfaces are medium olive with splashes of darker steel. The obverse has minor imperfections including a small mark at the lips and an old, short scratch from the chin. The reverse has a number of blemishes. Among those are several small nicks, a planchet defect at the first S, and a few modest rim bruises. MRB Fine 12.(Registry values: P5) (NGC ID# 223G, PCGS# 1340)
