    Description

Popular 1793 Chain Cent, S-3, XF Sharpness

1793 Chain 1C AMERICA--Corroded--NCS. XF Details. S-3, B-4, Low R.3. This variety is distinguished by a high R in LIBERTY, which is closely spaced to the T. On the reverse, AMERICA is spelled out. Although corroded on both sides, there are areas where the surfaces are remarkably smooth or only minutely porous. The sharpness is impressive, and corrosion does not obscure any of the design elements. The chain and denomination are boldly impressed, and Liberty is fully defined. At first glance the chocolate-brown surfaces appear quite pleasing, and only under a loupe does the corrosion appear significant. Scattered marks are typical for the grade, and none merit individual mention. Chain cents, the nation's first regular issue coins, were struck for just a few months in 1793 until they were replaced by the Wreath design. While contemporaries complained that the chain was emblematic of slavery, modern day collectors treasure these important pieces of numismatic history.
