    Description

Rare, Historically Significant 1793 Chain Cent, AMERICA XF40 NGC, S-2, High R.4.

1793 Chain 1C AMERICA XF40 NGC. S-2, High R.4. A wonderful example of, as Breen describes it, ''...the first regular coins minted by the Federal government on its own machinery and within its own premises.'' An important, yet scarce one-year type, the 1793 Chain Cent boasts an original mintage of a mere 36,103 pieces. Since most of these coins disappeared into circulation, it is little wonder that the few extant representatives are always in strong demand among both type collectors and early copper specialists. This historically significant piece shows rich moderate to deep-brown surfaces, with no significant marks of any kind. Though the obverse is somewhat softly struck, as always, the reverse displays the devices clearly. Without magnification, the only noticeable surface blemish is a thin mark just behind and below Liberty's eye, while the virtually unmarked reverse shows a hint of verdigris near the Chain, and around the central reverse letters.
A fabulous coin for inclusion into a type set of early American coinage.
