1793 S-1 CENT, AU58
CHOICE CHAIN AMERI.
1793 S-1 R4 CHAIN AMERI. AU58 PCGS, CAC Approved. Very
attractive glossy chocolate brown with frosty bluish steel
overtones in the fields. Peeps of faded mint red show in protected
areas on both sides. The fields are smooth and slightly reflective
with needle-sharp details thanks to the very early die state. Just
a hint of very light friction on the highest points of the hair
from mint state. This cent has outstanding eye appeal and the color
is about the most attractive you will ever encounter on a 1793
Chain Cent. There are a few minor contact marks including a thin
diagonal nick on the 3, two smaller nicks above the 3, a horizontal
nick-like planchet chip on the cheek just left of the mouth (as
struck), and a pair of faint parallel diagonal hairline scratches
on the forehead. The reverse is nearly pristine; the only notable
defect is a small planchet chip below the O in OF, and this chip
contains traces of dark planchet impurity in its bottom, as struck.
EDS, Breen state I, before the small bulge forms under the 1 in the
date. A sharp, very attractive cent, and the eye appeal is enhanced
by the reflective fields and traces of original mint color. Graded
AU50 by Noyes and Bland, and tied for CC#3 in both census lists
(Noyes photo #28733). Removed from an NGC slab graded MS62 Brown.
This cataloger's EAC grade is AU55. A beautiful example of this
classic early American cent. The attribution and the Holmes & Husak
Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS Gold Shield label. PCGS
population 3; 3 finer: 1 in 61, 1 in 63, 1 in 64.

Terranova-Martin Paul (The Rarities Group)-Heritage Auctions 10/1990:452-Martin Haber (South Miami Rare Coins)-Anthony J. Terranova-Dr. Haig Koshkarian, American Numismatic Rarities (ANR) 3/9/2004:7 (via Anthony J. Terranova) 4/2004-Daniel W. Holmes, Jr., McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Goldbergs 9/6/2009:1-The Liberty Cap Foundation. David Tripp writes that this coin was brought to Sotheby Parke Bernet in New York by a lady that lived in Manhattan, and left it with him for inspection. It was in a group of miscellaneous coins and tokens, otherwise of no appreciable value. He took the coin to Lester Merkin who was amazed at what he saw, and graded the coin EF45.
Daniel W. Holmes, Jr. acquired this cent following the American Numismatic Rarities auction of the Dr. Haig Koshkarian Collection. A Cleveland, Ohio native, Holmes served as Early American Coppers vice-president from 2002 to 2005 and president from 2005 to 2009. He earned an MBA from the Stern School of Business at New York University. Holmes was chairman and CEO of Cleveland-based Morrison Products, manufacturers of fans and blowers for the HVAC industry. In addition to his service on the board of the American Numismatic Society, Holmes served industry trade associations and he was a member of the manufacturing council that advised President Bush and President Obama. Holmes lost his battle with ALS in 2016 at age 77. The Daniel W. Holmes, Jr. large cent collection was the most complete ever formed and lacked only two unique varieties that never became available.
