Description

1793 LIBERTY CAP CENT, AU50
CONDITION CENSUS S-14

1793 S-14 R5- Liberty Cap AU50 PCGS. Choice glossy medium chocolate brown and steel. Smooth and nearly flawless with light wear on the highpoints and great eye appeal. The only notable marks, and they are trivial, are a microscopic scrape on the rim over RT in LIBERTY, a broken line of microscopic planchet voids down the cheek (as struck), and a tiny rim nick between the I & T in UNITED. LDS, Breen state III. The bisecting die crack on the obverse is strong; the fields and devices on the left side of the crack are clearly on a higher plain than the ones on the right side. In addition, there is a subtle bulge in the field at NT in CENT. A marvelous Liberty Cap Cent. Graded EF40 by Del Bland and tied for CC#2 honors in his census. Noyes says EF40 and tied for CC#2 as well, his photo #20004. This cataloger's EAC grade is EF40. Comes with a nice provenance. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS Gold Shield label. PCGS population 1; 2 finer: 1 in 50+, 1 in 53. 35492.50/37130171.
Found in Europe in 1968-Jerry Cohen and Abner Kreisberg 11/1968-R. E. Naftzger, Jr., 1989 EAC Sale, lot 18 (where graded EF45)-Douglas F. Bird Collection, Goldbergs 2/16/2020:6-Walter J. Husak Collection (includes the Naftzger collection envelope and EAC Sale lot ticket).

The name Douglas F. Bird of Santa Monica, California appeared in the July 1973 issue of Penny-Wise as a new member of Early American Coppers alongside the present cataloger (MRB). The same issue carried other prominent names as new members including Larry Goldberg, William C. Noyes, Herbert Oechsner, Mel Wacks, and Charles M. Wormser. A Boston native, Douglas Francis Bird was born on June 25, 1944 and passed away January 5, 2023. Bird earned a degree in business administration from Loyola University, and he was a Vietnam veteran who served a 13-month tour in the late 1960s. While employed in the field of human resources from 1969 to 1982, Bird operated a part-time coin business, making numismatics his full-time profession starting in 1982.
