FINEST GRADED 1793 SHELDON-7 RARITY

1793 S-7 R6- Wreath Cent VF20 PCGS. Glossy uniform chocolate brown. The only contact marks are a very light rim bruise just right of the Y in LIBERTY and a slightly stronger one under the right side of the fraction. Would rate a higher grade but there are shallow parallel planchet fissures on an otherwise smooth obverse. The fissures slant down slightly to the right of horizontal, and the most noticeable of these fissures is in the field off the chin. Planchet flaws are a rather common problem for our earliest cents thanks to rudimentary manufacturing processes during the first few years at the Mint. The reverse is smooth and choice. MDS, Breen state III early, with a slight bulge through the 179 in the date. Called VF20 net F12 and CC#4 in the Noyes census, his photo #27972. Bland says F15 and tied for CC#3. This cataloger's EAC grade is F15. The attribution is noted on the PCGS Gold Shield label. PCGS population 1; none finer. 35453.20/40347219.

Known as "Jack," Wallace M. Wadlington, a San Diego, California commodities trader, assembled a large cent collection, sold via Bob Grellman and Chris McCawley, that was characterized by completeness and quality. His collection was nearly complete by both Sheldon and Newcomb number, lacking only three unique late-date varieties. In addition, he acquired 33 of the Sheldon "NC" varieties. His additional collecting interests focused on colonial coins and numismatic literature. Wadlington served as an Army captain in Vietnam.
