Description

Rare 1793 Chain AMERI. Cent

1793 Chain AMERI. VG 10 PCGS. S-1, R.4. The Chain AMERI. cent was the first coin produced in the U.S. mint in 1793, and it had a very short production run before being modified by spelling out AMERICA, the chain on the reverse being later discontinued in favor of the wreath design. This is a pleasing example that has good detailing (for the grade) on all the devices. The end of the hair curls show fine detailing and the chain is well defined, as usual. The surfaces overall are a rich, chocolate-brown. The only detracting elements are the typically weak date and some minor porosity--a common occurrence on early type coins.
