Affordable 1793 S-1 AMERI. Grading Good 6
1793 Chain AMERI. S-1, R.4. Sharpness of VG 7, net Good 6. One of the most popular varieties in numismatics, the die engraver ran a little short of space on the reverse, and abbreviated America to AMERI. Contemporary public outcry demanded a new design in early 1793, after the press and local hangers-on complained that "Liberty was in chains," and the Philadelphia Mint complied by completely redesigning the cent, not once but twice in 1793 alone.The present example boasts dark-brown patina throughout, and clean surfaces for the grade. The date is weak, and there is a rim bump located on the right rim before Liberty's nose, another below the date. On the reverse, there are some minor rim cuts, but all the lettering and devices are clear. An affordable example of this storied and delightful variety.
