Description
1793 Chain Cent VF 35. Wide Date. S-2, R.4+. A well detailed Chain cent that has mellowed reddish-brown color over both sides. The obverse shows a surprising amount of definition (this side usually is much weaker than the reverse) and there are no distracting blemishes on either side. The surfaces do, however, show an unusual feature that needs to be mentioned. On both sides, but especially on the obverse, there are numerous crisscrossing lines that at first look like scratches. But closer observation reveals that they are a lighter color than the surrounding surface of the coin. It is difficult to speculate what might have caused this. Or best guess, and it is only a guess, is perhaps the piece was wrapped with string at one time and this prevented these lined areas from toning at the same rate as the rest of the coin. There are also several silvery spots on the rims, spots that almost resemble solder. These lines and silvery spots are subtle and have little effect on the overall attractiveness of the coin, but we feel we must mention them for accuracy's sake. Trends $11,000 in VF 20, $16,500 in XF 40.
