Description
Remarkable AU 58 1793 Chain Cent--An Upper Condition Census Coin
1793 Chain AMERICA AU 58 NGC. S-3, Low R.3. The "Leaning R" variety with irregular spacing in the letters of LIBERTY, the R being too large, too high, and leaning to the right. Over the years we have been privileged to handle numerous Chain cents, and quite a few of the "Leaning R" variety. However, the vast majority have been in the Poor 1 to Fine 12 grade range. This is far and away the finest S-3 we have ever sold at public auction. The head of Liberty, which is so ill-defined on lower grade specimens, is here brought up in complete and bold relief with all the individual strands of hair fully articulated. The reverse is also boldly defined with the links in the chain set off from the flatness of the surrounding fields, yielding an almost three-dimensional effect. Medium reddish-brown color overall with an outlining of olive-green surrounding the devices, most of the original mint luster is intact still, and one can even discern metal flow in the reverse fields. The state of preservation of this coin is nothing short of remarkable. The surfaces do not show even the slightest hint of corrosion nor a speck of carbon. We are equally hard pressed to locate any identifiers for pedigree purposes. Surely the provenance of this coin is well known to EAC members, but it comes to us unidentified.Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 223F, PCGS# 1341, GSID# 1213)
