Vine and Bars Wreath Cent--MS 66--A Superb Condition Census Coin

1793 Wreath Cent--Vine and Bars--MS 66 Brown NGC. S-9, R.2. One of the more frequently encountered varieties, the S-9 is characterized by the curved sprig on the obverse, and on the reverse by the wide, rounded bow and four trefoils in a line with the word CENT. While one of the more "common" varieties of Wreath cents, there is nothing common about this coin. It is far and away the finest Wreath cent we have ever offered at public auction, regardless of variety. In fact, according to EAC standards it is tied with the Auction '83 example for finest known. The surfaces are bright and glossy; in fact, the fields have a hint of semi-reflectiveness giving the coin a medal-like appearance--which is further reinforced by the devices that are set off by themselves and unobstructed by abrasions or unnecessary legends. The striking details are extraordinarily sharp with needle-like definition on the hair curls of Liberty. The bright glossiness of the coin is overlaid by medium brown patina with just a hint of original underlying red. The only identifying feature we see that could be used for pedigree purposes is a tiny spot in the lower right obverse field out from the lower portion of Liberty's neck.
