Description

1793 1C Wreath Cent--Vine and Bars--Fine 15 Corroded, Lacquered, Cleaned. S-10, R.4. This piece was lacquered on the obverse long ago, giving it a coal-black appearance, but then an ill-advised removal of the lacquer was attempted, using abrasive rubbing or some other similar method. The result was somewhat disastrous, leaving a streaky black and brown obverse and an attractive, slightly porous reverse. Curiously, the piece is conical in nature, with the obverse approximately a millimeter to a millimeter and a half larger in diameter than the reverse. The vine and bars design on the edge has not been disturbed to intentionally create this effect, and we are not aware of any literature attesting to any other specimen with this characteristic.
