Delightful Shattered Obverse 1794 S-23
1794 S-23, R.4. Sharpness of VF 25, net VF 20. Cleaned and recolored with bluish hues throughout and overall a medium-brown. The obverse die shattered with three heavy cracks, as usually seen. One of the most beautiful coins in the early part of this collection, with splendid surfaces and abundant eye appeal. Identifiable by a tiny rim mark across from Liberty's chin, and a small planchet flake just under the cap, near the curls. An important rarity, in fact, this coin is in the Condition Census as tied for tenth finest known with five others.Ex: Leonard Kusterer; Benjamin Levin (8/83); Denis Loring; Richard V. Punchard (via Denis Loring, 8/92).
