Description
Desirable 1794 S-38 Marred Field
1794 S-38, R.5. Sharpness of VG 8 Porous, net VG 7. The marred field, single berry left of bow variety. The entire surfaces are lightly porous. Struck a bit off-center with thick reeding behind the cap, and no reeding on the lower right obverse, similar on the reverse. The reverse die was rotated clockwise approximately 45 degrees when struck. As to abrasions, there are few, the obverse is clean and bump-free, the reverse too, the only complaint is with a weak strike through STATES. One curious feature, the edge lettering is very weak or missing, and this appears to have been done outside the mint, with the letters scratched off by some idle individual who apparently failed to appreciate the rarity of this die pairing.Ex: Robinson, Victor-McCawley (RVM), 1/88; Robinson S. Brown, Jr.; Douglas F. Bird 8/89; Gary Ruttenberg Collection, (McCawley-Grellman 8/96), lot 83.
