Description
Splendid S-59, Choice VF 30
1794 S-59, R.3. Sharpness of VF 30, net VF 30. A splendid, choice coin which boasts even-tan color and clean surfaces. Struck a bit off-center, strong on the bottom of the obverse, weak at the top, similar on the corresponding sections of the reverse. Identifiable by a tiny rim tick above the L of LIBERTY, a hidden horizontal nose nick, and on the reverse by two small digs on the left side of the U of UNITED. Struck after the dies clashed (Die State II), with clash marks noted below the cap, between the cap and hair, and in front of the chin and throat, also with curls noted within the wreath. Not in the Condition Census, but one could scarcely imagine a better coin worth upgrading over this present specimen.Ex: R. E. Naftzger, Jr.; Denis W. Loring, 1971; Gary Ruttenberg; McCawley-Grellman Auction, 8/96, lot 95; Christopher B. Young (Chesapeake Bay Rare Coins).
