1794 1C Head of 1793, Edge of 1793, S-19a, B-3a, High R.5, VF35
Bland, VF30 Noyes; XF40 PCGS Secure. Displaying mottled patina
of golden-tan, light olive, and steel-brown, this is an
extraordinary cent that has remarkable surfaces for the variety. A
glass reveals old, hard corrosion that fails to diminish the eye
appeal. The reverse is especially fine with faint cartwheel luster.
Faint hairlines at the lower obverse disappear into the surrounding
surface and are invisible without magnification. Myriad planchet
marks and a few post-mint handling marks are evident.Variety Equivalents: Maris 2, Frossard 2.1, Doughty 19, Hays 2, Chapman 2.
Obverse 2: Curved Date, Double Chin. The obverse is found on S-18a, S-18b, S-19a, and S-19b. This die was polished before its first use. The shoulder loop is missing and the lower edge of the cap is broken. Liberty's hair locks are shallow and pointed.
Reverse B: Doubled Berry at AM. This reverse is found on S-19a, S-19b, S-20, NC-7, and S-21. An extra berry is isolated in the field directly over the berry below AM in AMERICA. The heavy, extended dentils are very close to the tops of the legend letters. The stems and ribbon ends are long and closely spaced.
Edge: The Edge of 1793 has the leaf following DOLLAR pointing or curved down in relation to the letters.
Die State I: An early die state according to Walter Breen's enumeration, this piece exhibits a faint obverse die bulge from the cap down to the middle hair curls. The bulge developed on late state examples of S-18b, proving that these coins were struck after the S-18 cents.
Rarity and Census: Listed as the finest known S-19a in Bland's Condition Census and in Noyes' census. The planchet quality suggests that these cents were produced on the crude, inadequate blanks prepared for the earliest 1794 cents.
Commentary: The late Tom Morley illustrated this cent in his guide, 1794 Cents Graded and Updated, published in 1979.
Boka Commentary: This beauty is my favorite considering the combination of rarity, condition census status, pedigree, and overall "eye appeal." In addition to being a coveted "Head of "93," it is also the discovery coin of the variety.
Biography: The CEO of Morrison Products, Daniel W. Holmes, Jr. was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1938. He earned an MBA from New York University and continued his education at Harvard Business School. Like many contemporary collections, Holmes began with Lincoln cents as a child. He eventually discovered early coppers, joining EAC in 1973. Over the next three decades, he assembled the most complete collection of large cent varieties ever formed. Holmes, a past-president of EAC, passed away in January 2016.
