    1794 S-65 Cent, MS64+ Brown
    Shielded Hair Obverse
    Census Level Specimen

1794 1C Head of 1794 MS64+ Brown NGC. S-65, B-51, R.1. Breen Die State IX with all of the obverse and reverse cracks described in his Large Cent Encyclopedia, including the tiny parallel reverse die cracks as the die falls apart. Later die states are subjective and extremely rare and we only know of one piece in the ANS that is slightly later than this piece. The Shielded Hair obverse is usually seen in this plentiful die pair, but also appears with the Missing Fraction Bar reverse. The dies were slightly misaligned, and the lower left obverse border is always heavier than the upper right border.

Both sides have smooth medium brown surfaces with full luster and retain considerable orange mint color, especially on the obverse. This is an exceptional example with excellent eye appeal. The tops of the hair curls are slightly blunt as expected. Although the S-65 die pair ranks among the most plentiful in the 1794 series, few high grade examples are known, and the present specimen is easily in the condition census.

We are unable to plate match this example to any of the 18 pieces (17 illustrated) in the Noyes reference, United States Large Cents 1793-1794. We are also unable to match this piece to any other examples recorded in the Noyes, Bland, or Boka records. This lovely specimen appears to be a new example previously unlisted in any census record, and likely one of the finest known examples, perhaps tied for second or third best. Our EAC grade AU55.(Registry values: P1) (NGC ID# 223M, PCGS# 901374)
