Terminal Die State

1794 1C Head of 1794, S-22, B-6, R.1, VF35 Bland; AU50 PCGS
Secure. This is an especially attractive example that was
struck from a clean, problem-free planchet. The coin has a lovely
reddish-brown coloration with olive overtones. The late die state
of this piece accounts for the heavy metal flow in the obverse
fields, giving the coin a "rippling" effect when examined with a
magnifier. The only mentionable defect is a shallow, angling
scratch on the lower reverse through the final 0 in the
denominator.Variety Equivalents: Maris 28, Frossard 17, Doughty 48, Hays 43, Chapman 6.
Obverse 5: Downturned Sixth Lock. Usually known simply as the Bent Lock obverse, the downturned sixth hair lock (counting from the bottom) is diagnostic. This obverse is unique to S-22.
Reverse C: Mounds. Although a few examples are known in the early or perfect die state, most survivors are immediately recognized by the varying range of die bulges on the reverse that are called Mounds. This reverse is unique to S-22.
Die State VIII: Mounds on the reverse are prominent at the top of the wreath, within the wreath opposite RICA, and also within the wreath opposite NIT. The obverse has a prominent vertical die crack through the 4 to the earlobe and hair.
Rarity and Census: Walter Breen suggested that as many as 60,000 examples were struck, and perhaps as many as 2,500 or 3,000 survive today. This example is tied for the 25th finest of the variety according to Del Bland.
Commentary: This is one of the few 1794 varieties that can be identified instantly with a glance at the obverse or the reverse. Both sides made no other appearances in the 1794 series, and both are distinctive.
Boka Commentary: This coin is such that I never really felt the need to upgrade it. Rasmussen had good taste.
Biography: An avid large cent collector who enjoyed early, middle, and late date cents, Wesley A. Rasmussen served as Early American Coppers president from 1996 to 1999. A native of Milwaukee who was born in 1934, Wes operated a printing company in Minneapolis, and served for many years as the publisher of Penny-Wise. Now retired, his former company continues to print the EAC journal today. Superior sold his late date cents in 1998, and Heritage sold his early and middle date cents at the 2005 FUN convention.
