1794 S-23 Head of 1794 Cent, XF45
Tied for Third Finest

1794 1C Head of 1794, S-23, B-7, High R.4, VF35 Bland, VF30
Noyes; XF45 PCGS Secure. Exceptional chestnut-brown surfaces
are above average, showing small splashes of maroon corrosion on
the obverse, and microscopic roughness on the reverse.Variety Equivalents: Maris 13, Frossard 9, Doughty 33, Hays 18, Chapman 7.
Obverse 6: Sans Base 4. The 4 is missing its base, or at best, has an extremely faint base that can only be seen on higher grade pieces. This obverse is found only on S-23.
Reverse D: Tall Numerator. The numerator rests on a long and heavy fraction bar that covers the entire denomination The reverse is found on S-23 and S-24.
Die State V: The obverse has a diagonal bisecting crack through the tip of the pole to Liberty's throat, earlobe, hair, and cap. A second crack appears later from the border through the right top of the Y to the nose and cheek, disappearing just before joining the first crack at Liberty's jaw. Breen mentions reverse die bulging at NT that is practically invisible.
Rarity and Census: This is an elusive variety with perhaps 100 known. Tied with one other example for the third finest known according to Del Bland's Condition Census. Tied with two others for the third finest known in the Noyes census. One of the finer pieces is part of the ANS Collection, reducing the availability of Census-level examples.
Commentary: Although perfect dies exist, the scarce S-23 die marriage is usually recognized by the die crack from the pole to the throat and beyond.
Boka Commentary: One of my favorite coins with fantastic obverse die breaks and a stellar history of being clearly depicted on the front cover of the 1989 Jack Robinson sale catalog where it stands out invitingly.
Biography: A charter member of Early American Coppers, Gordon J. Wrubel is well-known as an expert in all areas of U.S. coins. He became a full-time coin dealer in 1974, and joined the Professional Numismatists Guild in 1980. He is also a life member of the American Numismatic Association. Gordon is a co-founder of the Professional Coin Grading Service and served for several years as the firm's Director of Grading. He is also a leading expert in "rock and roll" records.
