Description

1794 S-32, B-18 Cent, AU55+
Late Die State

1794 1C Head of 1794, S-32, B-18, R.2, AU55+ NGC. Ex: Bonard/Luer Collection. Breen Die State IV, with a heavy die crack through the first S in STATES to the wreath, ending in a light bulge at the O of ONE. Extensive reverse clash marks are noted. A typewritten envelope grading this piece AU55 notes that it is Ex: Dr. Sheldon, and we strongly believe it is the missing XF40 example in Del Bland's Condition Census, although we grade the piece slightly finer, and tied for the seventh finest known example. The Sheldon-64 cent in this sale is from the Numismatic Enterprises February 1968 sale, where the S-32 appears to match this coin. The chestnut and chocolate-brown surfaces are smooth and pristine, with traces of cartwheel luster. The high points of the hair are flat, limiting the grade as the surfaces strongly suggest an even higher grade. Our EAC grade XF45.
Probably Ex: Dr. William H. Sheldon; Stack's, privately; C. Douglas Smith (1965); Alfred Bonard; Numismatic Enterprises (2/1968), lot 26; Alfred Bonard; Carlyle Luer.
From The Carlyle A. Luer Collection.
