1794 1C Head of 1794, S-34, B-20, High R.5, VF30 Bland, VF30
Noyes; XF45 PCGS Secure. The reverse appears a few points finer
overall. Medium brown color with pale blue iridescence. A tiny
reverse rim nick appears at 12:30. The edge is marked "H-19" in two
places.Variety Equivalents: Maris 19, Frossard 25.2, Doughty 40, Hays 28, Chapman 13.
Obverse 13: Upturned Locks. The fourth and sixth hair locks, counting from the bottom, are turned upward, and between the, the fifth hair lock is doubled. Except for the earliest die states of S-32, the rim break over LI immediately identifies the obverse. This obverse is found on S-32, S-33, and S-34.
Reverse L: Single Berry, Leaf to Final A. There is only one berry left of the ribbon bow, a feature of this die and the next (S-36, 37, and 38). All other 1794 varieties have two berries at that location. The lowest leaf on the right is below the left corner of the final A in AMERICA. This reverse is found on S-34, S-35, and NC-1.
Die State III. The obverse always has a rim break over LI with an extension to the Liberty cap, and this example is cracked entirely through the top of the cap. The crack is heavy, and has the appearance of a retained cud. The reverse, rotated slightly counterclockwise, is uncracked, but with light clash marks.
Rarity and Census: Just over 30 examples of this variety are known and most of those are low quality. Only seven examples grade better than VG, and the Boka specimen, listed second in Del Bland's Condition Census, is the finest available example as the only better piece is part of the ANS Collection. Like Del Bland, Bill Noyes also grades this VF30 and lists it second in his Condition Census.
Commentary. The single berry feature is shared by two reverse dies, which are well known among large cent collectors, who love to cherrypick any example they can find. All six varieties from the two dies are rare, each rated Rarity-5 or higher. In 1949 Sheldon noted that S-34 was rarer than S-33 with just six examples known. Today somewhat more than 30 are known. The obverse is illustrated in Morley. The obverse and reverse are illustrated in Frossard-Hays, and in Al Boka's Provenance Gallery.
Boka Commentary: Another fantastic and beautiful copper traced back to the 19th century with a pedigree listing somewhat like a "who's who" of 1794 history. It doesn't get any better than this one.
Biography: A New York City resident, Oscar James Pearl, who was born on October 19, 1905, formed an extensive collection of 479 large cents that Numismatic Gallery sold in a 1944 fixed price list that included reprints of Crosby's The United States Cents of 1793 and Chapman's The Cents of the Year 1794. Additional items from the Pearl Collection were sold through Bowers and Ruddy in June 1979, and he died in California two months later on August 29, 1979.
