1794 1C Head of 1794, S-36, B-23, R.5, VF25 Bland, VF25 Noyes;
VF35 PCGS Secure. Microscopic roughness results in slightly
muted medium reddish-brown surfaces with excellent overall eye
appeal. A few trivial circulation marks are noted on Liberty's
profile and elsewhere on the obverse, with a few scattered marks on
the reverse.Variety Equivalents: Maris 43, Frossard 30, Doughty 63, Hays 31, Chapman 14.
Obverse 15: Crowded 4. Also known as the Low Head for the placement of the central device close to the date and far below LIBERTY. This obverse is found on S-36 and NC-1.
Reverse M: Single Berry, Leaf to C. Like the previous reverse die of S-34, S-35, and NC-1, and none others in the 1794 series, just one berry is positioned left of the ribbon bow. On this reverse, the lowest leaf on the right is below the right side of the C in AMERICA. This reverse is found on S-36, S-37, and S-38.
Die State I: This early die state cent has perfect obverse and reverse dies with no die cracks or clash marks.
Rarity and Census: Del Bland records an AU55 in the ANS Collection, an AU50 held privately, a VF35 also held privately, and a second VF35 with Dr. George French recorded as the most recent owner. Since Dr. French's collection was sold in 1929, that piece may be lost to numismatics. The four examples graded VF25 include one in the Connecticut State Library. Therefore, the Boka coin is tied for the third finest currently available to collectors. Bill Noyes lists this piece as fourth finest in his Condition Census, tied with two others in that position, and these are also tied for third finest available to collectors.
Commentary: Edward Maris discovered this variety in 1870, and he was the first to give the Crowded Date nomenclature that remains in use today. Maris described this variety in the 1870 second edition of his variety guide to 1794 cents, but made no mention of it in his first edition that was published the previous year.
Boka Commentary: This is a cherished rarity which I was able to purchase from my dear friend, Dan Holmes, only after he was able to upgrade it with a higher grade. A very tough variety to find nice, indeed.
Biography: John W. Adams is an investment banker in his native city of Boston, where he was born in 1936. He earned an undergraduate degree from Princeton, and earned his MBA from Harvard in 1960. Adams is a trustee of the Massachusetts Historical Society and a fellow of the American Antiquarian Society. He is known in the numismatic field for his celebrated collection of 1794 large cents that included 32 Chapman plate coins, 22 pieces illustrated in Hays-Frossard, and most of the plated cents in the Parmelee and Beckwith catalogs. Adams is the author of several numismatic works, including his two volume United States Numismatic Literature that discusses 19th and 20th century auction catalogs.
