    1794 S-37, B-24 Large Cent, VF Details
    From the Exman Collection

1794 1C Head of 1794, S-37, B-24, High R.6 -- Corrosion -- NGC Details. VF. Our EAC grade: sharpness of VF25, net VG8. Ex: Exman Collection. Breen Die State II. The widely spaced 1 in the date and the single berry left of the bow on the reverse identify this rare variety. The obverse die failed quickly, accounting for the elusive nature of the S-37. Del Bland graded this coin VG8 in 1991, and we concur with both him and Bill Noyes in assigning that as the net grade. Noyes grades this piece VF25 for sharpness, and we agree, with average minus surfaces. It ranks tied for seventh finest per Bland, and eighth best according to Noyes.

The obverse die was heavily polished, resulting in some incomplete detail, and the dark brown surfaces are extensively corroded. This variety is often called the Steigerwalt variety, as it was discovered by Charles Steigerwalt in 1900, and it is frequently the last of the 1794 cent varieties that most collectors acquire. The S-37 is clearly a member of large cent nobility. The envelope accompanying this piece is apparently from Dorothy Paschal, using Dr. Sheldon's typewriter. The handwritten notes on the envelope are probably from Eugene Exman, who noted that Dorothy Paschal requested first right of refusal if the coin was ever sold. However, this piece remained in the Exman estate for 34 years after Ms. Paschal passed away.
Ex: J.J. Teaparty (10/1968); Denis W. Loring (12/1968); Dorothy Paschal; Roy E. Naftzger, Jr.; Eugene Exman (Heritage, 6/2015), lot 3760; Robert Padula.
