1794 S-47 Head of 1794 Cent, VF30
Tied for Seventh Finest Known
1794 1C Head of 1794, S-47, B-39, R.4, VF20 Bland; VF30 PCGS
Secure. Both sides of this pleasing cent exhibit olive,
chestnut, and steel toning. The surfaces exhibit numerous trivial
handling marks, and a diagonal planchet lamination is evident in
the left obverse field. Variety Equivalents: Maris 45, Doughty 25, Hays 6, Chapman 29.
Obverse 21: Doubled Dentil Left of 1. A Short Bust obverse with a gap between the shoulder and hair, and no shoulder loop. The 7 and 9 are much closer than the other digits. A doubled dentil is just left of the 1. Clear repunching is noted on LI of LIBERTY. This obverse is found on S-47, S-48, S-49, and NC-9.
Reverse V: Notched Lower Left Bow. The lower outside edge of the left ribbon bow has a small notch just left of the ribbon knot. This reverse is found only on S-47.
Die State II: A faint die crack joins the rim to the wreath just left of the first A in AMERICA. Other die cracks on this reverse die are difficult to see.
Rarity and Census: A scarce variety, overshadowed by its famous neighbor, the S-48 Starred Reverse. Perhaps 150 examples of S-47 survive, almost all in low grades. The ANS has the finest known that Del Bland grades XF45. Second best is just VF30. Del Bland grades this example VF20, and tied for seventh finest known.
Commentary: Die state evidence suggests that all examples of S-47 were coined between the earliest two die states of S-48.
Boka Commentary: Surely a difficult variety to find in this condition; I was lucky to snatch up this cent at Tom Reynolds' table during an ANA convention in San Francisco.
Biography: A numismatic auctioneer in the 1960s, Henry Christensen was based in New Jersey. He was born in New Jersey about 1916, and died at Madison, New Jersey on January 27, 1979. His parents were from Norway. A graduate of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Christensen operated an institutional laundry business from the time of his college graduation until the mid-1950s when he sold the business to concentrate on his numismatic career. He joined the ANA in 1954 and his first Numismatist ad appeared in the January 1955 issue. Christensen was recognized as an authority on Hispanic and Latin-American numismatics.
