Description

1794 S-38, B-25 Cent, XF45
The Third Finest Known
Second Finest in Collectors' Hands

1794 1C Head of 1794 XF45 NGC. S-38, B-25, R.5. Our EAC Grade VF30. Ex: Mervis Collection. Breen Die State II. Both die chips in the left obverse field are plain and obvious. Bill Noyes rates the surfaces of this lovely cent as Average, and we concur with his assessment. Both sides are pleasing light brown, with wisps of light blue toning on the high points. The sharpness is slightly finer with faint hairlines on the obverse, mostly through the cap and over the ear. Bland and Noyes both carry this example as the third finest known 1794 S-38 cent. While we grade the piece VF30 rather than VF35 as they do, the relative ranks in the census remains unchanged. The top six in Bland's census grade 55, 45, 35, 25, 25, 20, and the top six in the Noyes list grade 55, 45, 35, 25, 20, 20. With the second finest example in the ANS Collection, this example is the second best available to collectors.
