Condition Census 1794 S-21 Cent, MS62 Brown
The Garrett Specimen

1794 1C MS62 Brown PCGS. S-21, R.3. Breen Die State III. Labeled the Sans Milling variety by Dr. Edward Maris in his 1869 reference on the subject, and later the Flat Pole variety by Dr. William Sheldon in his 1958 treatise, Penny Whimsy. "Sans milling" refers to the typically weak dentilation found on the obverse, whereas the "flat pole" simply identifies the flattened feature at the end of Ms. Liberty's pole.
The S-21 example offered here is important not only because of its outstanding state of preservation, but also its provenance. Through plate matching, we are confident that this piece is the Frossard/Garrett specimen that originated from the core collection of Dr. Maris. The cataloger of the November 1979 Garrett sale described this specimen as follows: "Identifiable by a dark spot in the hair behind the ear and below the cap, otherwise with perfect reddish-brown surfaces. Well struck with the lettering, numerals, and devices all sharply defined." In the same sale this coin was listed as being "mid-range in the Condition Census." Currently, Noyes classifies this piece as tied with the Clark cent for number the number five slot, while Bland places it at number 11 in their respective Condition Census compilations.
The dark spot mentioned by the Garrett cataloger is a superficial area of toning observed on the third major lock of hair below the cap. A smaller spot is found on the base of the first lock, but well into head and above the previously mentioned dark area. Neither feature is immediately noticeable or distracting. In fact, both are plainly visible only with the aid of magnification. We make note of these anomalies solely for the benefit of future collectors and numismatic researchers. Otherwise, the light red-brown surfaces are surprisingly free of distractions and a pleasure to behold. EAC 50.
