Description

1794 S-18a Head of 1793 Cent, VG Details
1793 Edge Device

1794 1C S-18a R5+ Head of 1793, Edge of 1793, Double Chin, VG Detail, Environmental Damage, PCGS. Uniform dark chocolate brown. Covered with moderate roughness but there is no verdigris. The only mark is a dull but strong nick in the wreath right of the T in CENT. The date and legends are not strong thanks to the roughness but they are all easily readable, and the down-pointed leaf stem following DOLLAR is clear. Graded VG10 sharpness net AG3 and tied for CC#9 in the Noyes census, his photo #28135. Bland says VG10 net AG3 and tied for CC#9. This cataloger's EAC grade is VG10 sharpness net AG3. A rough but acceptable example of this very rare variety. The attribution and COL Ellsworth Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS Gold Shield label (35510.97/44293928).
Ex Stack's 6/1968 (privately)-Hiram T. Ward 1976 (via Denis W. Loring)-Robinson S. "Robbie" Brown, Jr., Superior 9/30/1986:24 ($1375)-Robinson S. "Robbie" Brown, Jr., Superior 1/27/1996:24 ($2750)-COL Steven K. Ellsworth.

The Robinson S. Brown, Jr. Collection of Large Cents, sold by Superior in two landmark auctions (1986 and 1996), represents one of the finest offerings of early American copper ever assembled. The September 1986 sale featured large cents from 1793 through 1857, achieving nearly $1.4 million in prices realized. Highlights included exceptional 1793 Chain and Wreath cents, top-tier Liberty Caps and early Draped Busts, and a nearly unbroken run of rare die marriages across the series. The catalog, shaped with expert input from leading specialists, emphasized not only rarity but condition, and many pieces were tied to famous provenances, solidifying Brown's reputation as a connoisseur and student of U.S. copper.

The follow-up January 1996 sale was devoted exclusively to Brown's 1793-1839 cents, with Del Bland's attributions and cataloguing bringing scholarly rigor to the presentation. This auction realized nearly $2 million, with individual coins-such as key 1793 varieties, Condition Census 1794s, and Mint State survivors of early 19th-century dates-achieving record prices. The catalog itself was hailed as a reference work, complete with detailed pedigrees, die states, and extensive plate photography. Together, the two Brown sales not only dispersed a collection of historic depth and quality but also advanced the literature of large cent study, leaving an enduring legacy for specialists in early American copper. Superior conducted a third Brown sale in 2002, featuring his collection of late date large cents through 1857.
