Heck Die State 2

1794 1C S-25 R3 Head of 1794 XF45 PCGS. The obverse is glossy medium brown blending to chocolate in protected areas; the reverse is glossy steel brown with olive brown in protected areas. The reverse is choice, void of marks or other distractions. The obverse, however, suffers from several nicks including a large one in the hair just left of the ear and another in the field close to the lower curls. The 1991 Heritage ANA Early Spring Auction, held in Dallas, showcased a wide array of U.S. numismatics, but its copper offerings were a particularly important feature. The large cent section began with foundational 1793 issues, including Wreath cents in pleasing collectible condition, and extended into the 1794-1796 Liberty Caps, Draped Busts, and later early dates. Among the highlights was the remarkable triple-struck 1797 cent from the Dr. Ruby Collection, described as one of the most spectacular multiple strikes ever reported, which drew significant attention. Other standout early date cents included strong 1798 examples, a range of 1797 die marriages, and later rarities through 1811, several exhibiting sharp detail and attractive color. These coins reflected Heritage's emphasis on careful attribution and historical context in their cataloguing.

Later copper continued with high-grade Classic Head and middle date cents, including Mint State 1817 and 1830s-1850s issues retaining significant original red luster. Together, the early copper sections balanced landmark rarities, mint errors, and Condition Census material with more affordable collector-grade pieces, reinforcing the ANA sale's appeal to a broad audience. This breadth made the 1991 Heritage sale a memorable event for copper specialists, providing collecting opportunities across the entire early U.S. cent series.
