Description

1794 S-32 Head of 1794 Cent, MS64+ Brown
The Second Finest Known

1794 1C S-32 R2 Head of 1794 MS64+ Brown PCGS. CAC Approved. Lustrous medium brown and light chocolate. A sharp cent that has great eye appeal, but it was unevenly struck, as usual with this variety. The die faces were not parallel (Breen calls this axial misalignment) pressing the planchet more strongly on the left side then on the right. The result is a very strong strike on the left and in the centers but with weakness along the right edge of both sides. Perhaps that's why the reverse die cracked so early in the marriage. The weakly struck areas display many of the tiny planchet imperfections that normally strike out. These planchet chips are most evident along the right edge on all the high grade examples listed in the Noyes census. Otherwise this cent is free of marks or other notable defects. M-LDS, Breen state IV, Heck state 6. The cud break at LI in LIBERTY is clear and the crack from the rim through the first S in STATES extends heavily through the wreath toward the O in ONE. Called MS63 Choice and CC#2 in the Noyes census, his photo #22633. Bland says MS60 and CC#2 behind a slightly finer example on his census list. This cataloger's EAC grade is MS60. A beautiful cent that comes with a very nice provenance that has remained unbroken for more than a century. The attribution and COL Ellsworth Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS Gold Shield label (35561.64+/26772765).

The June 1984 Stack's auction of the Floyd T. Starr Collection was one of the landmark events in the history of early American copper. Starr's large cents began with a near-complete set of 1793 varieties, including both of the legendary Strawberry Leaf cents-the unique NC-2 and one of the three known NC-3s-along with superb Chain, Wreath, and Liberty Cap cents, many in Mint State. Other highlights of the early dates included exceptional 1794s, a Mint State 1797 from the Nichols Find, and high-grade examples of the key 1799 and 1801 1/000 cents. Starr's early date coins, many with pedigrees to Newcomb, Hines, and Crosby, reflected both rarity and exceptional quality, underscoring his reputation as one of the most uncompromising copper collectors of the 20th century.
The middle and late date large cents (1816-1857) were the nucleus of Starr's collection and widely considered the finest such set ever formed. Nearly every coin was Mint State or proof, with an extraordinary run of Newcomb varieties that included Finest Known and Condition Census representatives, rare die states, and unique pieces. Highlights included the unique 1823 "perfect date" proof, multiple proof-only issues such as the 1834 N-7, and the discovery piece of the 1848 Small Date. Starr had purchased the Howard R. Newcomb late dates intact in 1945 and later added coins from Hines and others, refining the collection over decades. With its combination of early rarities, late-date completeness, and impeccable pedigrees, the Starr Collection sale not only realized record prices but also became a definitive reference for large cent specialists.
