Description
1794 S-37 Head of 1794 Cent, XF45
Borckardt Discovery Coin
Finest Available S-37 Rarity
1794 1C S-37 R6+ Head of 1794 XF45 PCGS. Frosty steel brown
and light chocolate with lighter brown in some of the protected
areas and darker steel brown on the highpoints. The planchet is
smooth except for a collection of tiny planchet chips that cover
the field under the cap, as struck. Just a few minor contact marks
including a small nick in the hair left of the upper part of the
neck, a very fine scratch at the right top of the I in LIBERTY, a
rim bruise at D-S, and a trail of three pin pricks under the left
foot of the A in STATES. EDS, Breen state I, Heck state 1. The
sharpness and surfaces of this cent are remarkable for the very
rare S-37 variety; most of the 18 examples known today have
significant wear and surface problems. Graded VF35 net VF30 and
CC#2 behind the ANS example in the Noyes census, his photo #32007.
The top 10 in the Noyes census for the variety are 40(ANS)-30(this
coin)-15-10(4)-8(2)-6 (all net graded). Bland says VF30 and CC#2
after the ANS cent. His top 10 are 40(ANS)-30(this
coin)-15(2)-12-10-8(2)-7(2). This cataloger's EAC grade is
VF30. Certainly a highlight of this great collection. The
attribution and COL Ellsworth Collection provenance are noted on
the PCGS Gold Shield label (35576.45/13457262), The holder is
scuffed.Ex Purchased unattributed by Mark Borckardt for Bowers & Merena Galleries and consigned to the 1993 FUN Convention Sale 1/7/1993:220 $26,400)-Anthony J. Terranova, Chris McCawley, & Thomas D. Reynolds-Tom Morley 10/1993-Dr. Robert A. Schuman 5/28/1994-Dr. Allen Bennett 1999-Walter J. Husak, Heritage Auctions 2/15/2008:2039 ($161,000)-COL Steven K. Ellsworth. Walt continuously tried to buy Steve's S-37 for many years and once offered two S-37's and some cash for the trade of this S-37.
The January 1993 Bowers and Merena auction, held in conjunction with the FUN convention, offered a wide range of U.S. material, but copper played a prominent role, highlighted by standout early large cents. Chief among these was the 1794 Sheldon-37 cent, described as the finest specimen ever auctioned. The sale also featured strong selections of early date cents from the 1790s, many carefully cataloged with emphasis on rarity and preservation. Collectors of early copper found Condition Census-level survivors and coins with pedigrees to respected cabinets, ensuring that these pieces served both as collectibles and as scholarly references.
The broader copper offering included early 19th-century cents and half cents in high grades, with Mint State examples and notable die varieties drawing competitive bidding. While the auction is remembered for its record-setting Morgan dollars and gold rarities, the copper sections provided essential depth, particularly for early large cent specialists. With strong prices realized and widespread participation, the 1993 FUN sale underscored both the continuing vitality of copper collecting and Bowers and Merena's role in presenting coins of lasting scholarly and market importance.
